The duration of cosmetology school varies depending on your schedule and state requirements. Typically, programs range from nine months to two years. Full-time students generally complete the program faster, while part-time options allow for a more flexible schedule. The exact length is determined by the number of training hours required by your state’s licensing board.
Cosmetology is a comprehensive field encompassing various aspects of beauty and personal care. It includes the study and application of hair styling, cutting, and coloring techniques. Additionally, cosmetology covers skincare treatments, nail care procedures, and professional makeup application. This diverse discipline prepares students for a wide range of beauty-related careers.
Aesthetics (or esthetics) focuses on the health and appearance of the skin. People who are trained in aesthetics provide professional services like facials, exfoliation, masks, basic makeup, and hair removal to improve the appearance and feel of the skin. Estheticians learn how to design treatments for different skin types and skin concerns. The goal is to deliver safe services that create the desired result while building a strong relationship with the client.
Cosmetology is a broader license that includes hair services as well as essentials in skincare and nails. Cosmetology training can give you a wider service menu later on in your professional career. Hairstyling focuses specifically on hair services, including cutting, coloring, finishing, and texturizing. Training time for the hairstyling program is shorter due to its exclusive focus on hair. If you want the widest range of services, cosmetology may be a good fit. If you want to focus on hair or finish your education sooner, hairstyling may be a better route. The admissions team can help you choose the path that’s right for your goals.
